You may find the answer to this question in Guderian's own memoirs: 'Panzer Leader', originally published in 1952, but the most recent Da Capo Press Reissue Edition (2001) would surely be more informative.

Actually i'm reading "actung panzer" at the moment but i'm still near the start.

What i've got so far is he was into novelty and suprise,i dont think he would have been too happy if he was given the job to take moscow.
He wasnt too big into attacking a prepared enemy.

It was actually hitler having one of his rommel/Guderian moments that called the attack off in lew of driving south to capture russian armies and the oilfields.

As for the consequences?russia would have been finished,not because the capital fell but because stalin would have been captured.

If russia capitulated then the germans would have won the war in the west,Having said that if the west capitulated the the germans would have won the war in the east.
