Alcatraz was a former and famous prison built on an island just in San Francisco Bay. You can catch a ferry to get there and go on a tour of the place. It is run by the National Parks in the USA. It's a very interesting place, particularly the cells and hearing about the famous or should I say infamous prisoners like Al Capone who was finally locked up for tax evasion. There are several stories about escapes from the prison. One of the attempts was even reenacted on the program "Mythbusters" and yes they did prove it was possible to escape by making whatever the floating devices were.

Alcatraz was a high security prison on an island. It was thought to be impossible to escape from because you would have to survive the swim to shore. It is closed now because there were some human rights problems there, but if you go to San Francisco, CA you can take the grand tour for a fee.
