Since there are genetic relatives who are obese, there is a small chance that your baby could be prone to carrying excess weight. The best thing you can do to prevent that is to breast-feed, babies who are breast-fed are less likely to be overweight as they grow up. I'm not sure what kind of "slow" the father is, but it's probably not genetic, he might actually have a learning disability and if it had been found when he was a kid he might not be "slow" now. Breastfeeding will also help your child's mental development. Make sure you read and talk to your baby a lot once he/she is born, take your baby on outings once he is old enough, do everything you can to make sure your baby doesn't just sit around staring at a blank wall or a tv. Once your child is old enough to start talking, counting, reciting the alphabet, etc. just keep on eye on him and act fast if there are any problems, there are intervention programs that can help even the youngest children who might have developmental problems. But really, I bet there won't be. Good Luck.

People who suffer from down's syndrome often have weight problems. Secondly it depends on what you mean by mentally slow, is it brain damage, a genetic defect or down's syndrome (which is a genetic defect as well). Down's generally isn't genetic, or at least I don't think so. If it's somethig genetic, and you have the recessive gene it's highly likely. With what little info you have given that's the best I can do. You should talk to your OB about this and see if genetic testing is needed. It's risky if done while in utero so you may need to wait until after birth.

Much mental slowness is the result of either brain damage during birth or else having a mother who didn't know how to encourage brain development in the first three years of life. There are some conditions, like Down Syndrome, that are the result of a genetic problem but that are not necessarily a matter of being passed down in families. Conditions like Spina bifida are, but that's not what you're talking about.

Weight problems are the result of poor eating habits unless someone has a medical condition, which is not the case with most overweight people.

All mothers of all babies need to talk to their babies, make them feel safe and secure, and know how to help them develop their brain connections. (See www.zerotothree.org.) Mothers who don't know all that much about how to help their babies develop their brains and their abilities need to read good books on how to nurture young children in a way that will help them be their most intelligent and well adjusted.

I obviously don't have any guarantees to offer, but I tend to believe that the baby of that couple would be born with the same intellectual potential and same potential to be slender as all children are. It is what happens after the baby is born that will most likely determine how well his mental abilities develop and how healthy a diet he eats.

Why does this matter? We are not able to predict the future of others here. It is all in the genes and how they work in the child.
