atheletics is an individual game and football a collective one.
so those who r good individually may or may not be forming a good team.

I'm a bit confused. Football is the World game. Even USA has a fairly good World Cup record. Which countries were you thinking of comparing?

Perhaps football is the preferred route in countries where there are fewer athletic possibilities. In Europe and USA there are many opportunities to take part in athletics: good facilities, TV coverage, sponsorship, scholarships, etc. That might not be the case in South America or Africa.

Facilities for football can be very simple: jumpers for goalposts, etc.

And I would prefer to run around a pitch kicking a ball to running around a track anyday.

In the US the government does not spend ANY money on sports or sports coaching. It is all done privately. If the sport makes money there will be more money in the sport. Your football, our soccer is mostly a game played by kids. There is no where near the interest in soccer as there is in our football. many US Universities get almost all their sports money from their football teams. Other sports don't sell many tickets and certainly don't get any TV money.

It could be something to do with the priorities of the government and which areas of sport they put funding to. Only recently has the USA government put substantial money aside for football coaching
