Bentonite is a type of clay with high adsorption capacity. It is an absorbent aluminium phyllosilicate generally impure clay consisting mostly of montmorillonite, (Na,Ca)0.33(Al,Mg)2Si4O10(OH)2· that forms from weathering of volcanic ash. Acid activation (treatment) of bentonite can increase its adsorption capacity by increasing its surface area and pore space. Apparently, bentonite treated in this manner is used for bleaching.
