I admire your sentiment, our's is a GREAT country..
one city to know Canada?
if you want to know our history:
Ottawa, the nation's capital and the essence of our government.. there are lots of national museums and galleries here.
if you want to know our culture:
Toronto and Montreal two cosmopolitan cities that offer the best and most exciting of our English and French cultures respectively
if you want to know our Francophone heritage:
Quebec City - as close to Europe as you are likely to find on this continent, a beautiful, small city
if you want to know our people:
Halifax - its a small city on the East Coast, perhaps one of Canada's oldest.. by far Maritimers (as the people of the region are referred to) are among the kindest friendliest folk you are likely to meet anywhere. There is a great deal of history, culture and hospitality packed into this little city. good things do come in small packages.
if you want to know where we are going:
Vancouver, the gateway to the Pacific. This city is one of Canada's youngest and largest and represents the best and worst of Canada's future.
Good: cosmopolitan and extremely multicultural - everyone here is from somewhere else. The surrounding environment is spectacular, and there's lots of opportunity to commune with nature and outdoor activities.
Bad: the cost of living is spiraling out of control here, too many poor and homeless, bad city planning and even worse government are pretty much guaranteeing that the upcoming Olympics are going to further worsen the city and indebt us for generations - at the expense of the most vulnerable in our society.
I guess, it could be said - no one city exemplifies Canada, but if I was to pick one - I'd say Halifax.

Vancouver is nice ,Calgary is not even an hours drive from the mountains (Banff national park). Some of the most beautiful scenery available anywhere . Edmonton in 4 hours away from Jasper national park ,has the worlds largest mall (West Edmonton Mall) ,and is 3 hours from Calgary. Visit www.travelalberta.com to see more about these cities and more that the province has to offer . Note-Vancouver is in B.C.

Vancouver, vancouver, vancouver!!!
Vancouver, B.C. hands down!!
Absolutely gorgeous surroundings, it's nestled between the mountains, and bays/rivers. You can't beat the scenery! It is a large city, but even for all that, it's a wonderful place to live.
There is so much to do here ... water sports, winter sports, Parks, including one of the Largest Urban parks in the world, Museums, an aquarium, good public transportation, and a huge variety of ethnicities and cultures.
