Instead of buying telephone hardware could I use my PC as a telephone?

Yes.

I could have left it at that, but I think you really are asking what you would need to do to make your PC a telephone.

You will need a Modem that can handle voice. Luckily, most modems are built with this feature. Your PC may already be equipped with this feature.

You will need a microphone.

You already have the sound, you just need to make sure the mic will work. You can test the mic using the software that came with the OS or the Modem. And, you should have speakers.

You may also get a headset with mic to make it easier to hear your phone calls.

filretalk, a headset and a mike but you can buy a used telephone at any swap meet for five bucks..whats the big deal?

Definitely, If you have a modem you can do it.. Go to START>PROGRAMS>ACCESSORIES>COMMUNICATION and open the PHONE DIALER use it to call from your pc..
