Hey ! Dont go for geforce 6 series cards. Geforce 7 series are more advanced than them and also a lot cheaper. I personally feel that geforce 7600gs or gt would be most appropriate. If budget is a great constraint then go for geforce7300gs. If money doesnt matter then buy a geforce8800gts which is the only directx10 card. geforce8800gtx is also directx10 but a hell lot costlier. If your budget falls between that of geforce7600 and geforce 8800gts then consider buying a geforce7900gs.
I dont have much idea of ati graphics cards

What slot you have available for your graphic card? Not all cards are the same bus type. Its either PCI, AGP or PCIe.
Unlike what someone recommended above, you cant just get a 7600 or a 8800 card and install it, there's alot more to it.

PC Perspective: XFX GeForce 6800 GS Review - NVIDIA's Mid-Range Monster

Motherboards.org: XFX 6800GS SLI Video Card Review
"The XFX 6800GS is a great card for the MSRP of $249. Online the 6800GS is retailing for $209 online, making it an easy choice....NVIDIA has hit a home run with the GeForce 6800 GS and the XFX version of the card is the best of them."
Rage3D: NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GS Review
"Don't bother waiting for anything else to appear, the 6800 GS offers us the biggest bang for the fewest bucks of any graphics card we're likely to see anytime soon."
FiringSquad: NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GS Performance Review
"In our testing, the GeForce 6800 GS' completely outclassed its intended competitor..."
Hardocp: NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GS Preview
"We are very impressed with the NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GS as it seems to be more than worthy of its $249 price tag. NVIDIA is simply offering a ton of performance at a very attractive price....it would almost be foolish not to buy the 6800 GS for your gaming needs. "
HotHardware: NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GS
"We're going to get right to the point here. The new GeForce 6800 GS is a winner. With an MSRP of $249 this card currently has an unbeatable price / performance ratio. "
Extremetech: GeForce 6800 GS Review
"With the GeForce 6800 GS, Nvidia has set a difficult bar to leap, and in doing so has injected a lot of value into the most important price segment. "
Avault: Hardware Review | EVGA 6800GS
"The performance of the 6800 GS is simply amazing for a card in this range."
Tech Report: NVIDIA's GeForce 6800 GS graphics processor
"This video card, making its debut today, packs the considerable power of a GeForce 6800 GT at the not-so-painful price of $249."

"Considering the identical price of these two graphics cards (about $250), the GeForce 6800 GS enjoys a complete victory...."

ExtremeTech: Killer Gaming Rig 2005
"Bragging rights as a PC gamer are fleeting, at best. Someone can always come along in a few months with a faster system. But as games become more graphics and CPU intensive, having the headroom inherent in our liquid-cooled SLI system means that we won't have to upgrade this system for a long, long time."
Tech Report: The best of 2004
"The 6800 GT was clearly the best buy among the $399 cards."
Gamers Depot: Gear of the Year: Best Tech of 2004
"Yeah, we know that the Ultra’s are faster, but as far as bang for the buck goes, the GT has captivated our hearts and minds as 2004’s best GPU going. There’s ample supply of them and they simply kick the crap out of the competition at the same price level. Pixel Shader 3.0 is started to make its way into more titles and NVIDIA’s release of PureVideo functionality before the year’s end clinched the deal as this being the 'must-have' graphics card by gamers everywhere."
PC Gamer Magazine: GeForce 6800 Ultra
"…the 6800 Ultra is an amazing piece of technology!"
Got Apex: ASUS V9999 Gamer Edition/TD/256M GeForce 6800 Review

"It’s the best performing GeForce 6800 GT currently on the market."
Guru3D: Galaxy Glacier 6800 128 MB review
"The standard GeForce 6800 is just downright nice gaming experience, and it should be as it's still in that high-end class."
XBIT Labs: Doom III: Performance and Image Quality in Different Gaming Modes
"Doom 3 prefers graphics cards based on GPUs from NVIDIA, and their advantage is more or less perceptible in every class, from high-end to mainstream."
FiringSquad: PNY Verto 6800 GT Review
"The 6800 GT’s 350MHz, 16 pixel pipeline core was built for performance, while the 256MB of GDDR3 memory operating at 500MHz it is paired with ensures high frame rates at high resolutions and with eye candy features such as AA/AF enabled."
