I've read in many of the cichlid profiles that, "Like most large cichlids, your red bay snooks( or oscars, flowerhorns, bass, severus,etc ) will keep an eye on you. Be sure to set a good example." Now what does this mean? I m sure mine cichlids are always observing me while I m doing something in front of the tank. What does that statement signify, will our acts affect the attitude of fishes?

You shouldn't attack the other fish in front of it or it may learn from your example. Also don't put it in front of the TV when a voilent show is on or it may go on a killing rampage. You should at least cover its eyes when naughty scenes come on.
If you want it to breed, you need to set a "different" example (let's just leave it at that).
Just kidding.
I think it means you shouldn't make sudden movement, bang on the glass or give them food each time you come to the tank. I think you could also train a fish to do different things like swim around the tank and beg.
I mean, even in my planted tank the fish will follow my hand around and come and beg (gouramis, platys, guppies etc.).

The first poster is correct. They quickly learn where the food is coming from and this is all that goes through their little minds when they eye you. They are not studying you and are just not as smart as some owners like to think (depsite being quite brilliant for fish).

A gree basically with some of the other posters. The fish in quesiton can learn to respond to stimulus, but that's really about it. They are not "smart" in the way we think of the term and only in truth have a well developed group of inherited responses.

maybe don't bang on the glass or act like a madman in front of the fish? i dont' know. my bettas watch me constantly and i never really thought of setting a good example. does that mean eat all your bloodworms and dont leave any pellets floating uneaten?
