There is an interesting read at the gamepro site, that has "14 Gaming Myths Exposed".
One of them is, that gamers think they "need" 1080p.
The reality is: There are very few HDTVs on the market that can produce true 1080p. Even fewer find their way into peoples homes. Add to that, to see the difference between a 720p picture and a 1080p picture, you need an insanely big TV thats so big, that you could also get yourself a silverscreen and HD projector.
If the picture doesn't nearly fill your whole living room wall, you will not see the difference in sharpness. Especially not when running around shooting stuff.
Therefore, since the work involved with getting a Game fully playable in 1080p is significantly higher, the gaming companies aren't interested in doing more work for only a few people who couldn't tell the difference of these resolutions, if their TV wouldn't tell them the current resolution on the on screen display.
The talk about "true HD" and "full potential of the 50GB" is just a marketing hype by Sony.
Look at current PC Games. A PC has virtually limitless Harddiskspace. New PCs all come with Harddrives larger than 250 GB.
Theoretically a Game Developer could do a Game that uses hundreds of Gigabyte of Data. But they don't.
Why? Because its not necessary. The Gaming Engine itself is only a few Megabytes mostly.
The rest is Texture Data, sound and a few Movies perhaps. A game like Flight Simulator X for example that has Texture data for the whole world taken from satellite images takes only 2 DVDs.
A whole planet with worldwide Airtraffic needs only 8 GB. The Game runs in resolutions every Gaming Console dreams of. You can attach multiple Monitors to a PC, each running at a resolution exceeding the 1080p HDTV resolution.
So with what do you think should 50 GB be filled if a whole planet "fits" in 8?
Regarding "Fall of Man". This is an intense First Person Shooter.
You need quick reflexes and smooth gameplay.
At 720p the game outputs 60 frames per second. The 1080p resolution only works at 30 Frames per Second.
Thats OK for HD Movies (a movie in a cinema has only 24 fps), but in a game where you need lightening fast reflexes, 30 FPS is too slow. Ask a professional Counterstrike Player.

well first it takes a lot of money and time to make full HD..heck Final Fantasy 13 took almost 4 years and it is in both 720p and 1080p..i'm pretty sure only the cutscenes are in full 1080p HD. Square Enix(company who made FF) actually need to create a tool called the Crystal Tool Engine to make such stunning and attrative graphics where each strand of hair is very detailed and moves with the wind and what-not haha technology is not an easy thing to work in

To put it simply, creating games in 1080p is more expensive. Some developers just don't have the money. Also, although there are 1080p HDTVs out there, very few of them can directly receive a 1080p signal(from things such as PS3s) as an input. The 1080p HDTVs upconvert all incoming signals and that is how you can get 1080p resolution. Newer 1080p HDTVs will be capable of receiving the1080p signal.

hi, you can expect to have games running at fullhd within the next year(2008), this is becuase several things must happen. Frist the avialibity of full HD screens. Most of the sets run at 1080i. if you look at tiger direct. you will see that only few have fullhd, and the size is over 42"". The second and the most important is time. The game companies(most important programres) must learn to program on the new platform(there is a leaning curve here), and sp they can take the full advantage of both the added disk space and the fullhd. For example Gran Turismo HD was supposed to be the frist game for the Play Station3 to take advantage of that but it was launch as a download demo. Never the less the publisher told that once is lauched(with a diferent name and at the end of the year) will take fulladvantage of the Playstation 3 capavilities(the demo can run at fulHD, i have running at 1080i-that is the max of my LCD). So like me sit-thing we will se that games sooner than expected.

because have u ever thought that just because it has all that power does it really mean that it can be properly used. developers have got so good at making games that they make them at full potential from the start. Or maybe all that power is in the wrong places...
