Johnson will play more than Garko this season and that is the only reason I think he'll be better.

With the A's signing Shannon Stewart to play left I think that means that Nick Swisher is going to be the full time first baseman. And since they have Piazza at DH, that kind of leaves Johnson out. I would expect them to trade Johnson for some more help in the bullpen as the year goes on.

I like the A's, but I think Garko is the better player. Johnson seemed too confused at the plate last year while Garko did nothing but produce when he was given the chance. He may struggle to find playing time early in the season, but one he again proves he can produce, the Indians will find him plenty of ABs.

Ryan Garko certainly has a higher ceiling than Johnson. If he plays to the level he is capable and project his numbers over a full season he should produce better than Johnson across the board.

in my heart of hearts as a die hard a's fan I would like to say Dan Johnson. However, on the a's I think Nick Swisher will ultimately get the starting job due to the shannon stewart signing. especially if stewart can over come his foot problems. Fielding wise I think Johnson is great, but he's very streaky with batting. he slumped very badly the first part of the year, but came back rejuvenated after trip to AAA. but didn't do a lot in post season.......
so your guess is as good as mine. and why does it really matter?

Garko. The A's just signed Shannon Stewart, which probably signifies that Johnson has been relegated to the bench.
Last year, Johnson had some eye problems and supposedly that's fixed now. However, he also went down to the minors and supposedly fixed his swing (and just BLASTED AAA pitching) before he was called back up. When he was called back, he wasn't hitting MLB pitching still.
This is probably his make or break year, so it's now or never.

Dan Johnson.
After last season and his demotion to the minors he has to perform or he'll be moved down for good. He had a major reality check.

Simple: Ryan Garko will have the better season because he has a much better offense around him. Johnson has a past-his-prime Mike Piazza, and inconsistent Milton Bradley, and overrated Bobby Crosby, an inconsistent Nick Swisher, a barely-gets-on base Mark Kotsay, and no true lead off candidate (Jason Kendall? He doesn't steal bases anymore). Garko has an in-his-prime/annual MVP candidate Travis Hafner, Victor Martinez, Trot Nixon, Jhonny Peralta if he gets his act together, a promising hitter in Josh Barfield, a promising Andy Marte, and one of the better lead off men in baseball, Grady Sizemore, who is getting better each season. With that kind of cast, the edge goes to Ryan Garko.
