It really does depend on the species, and I have no idea which species of mantis are currently living in Australia! But I guess that it's late summer in Australia now, so leave them where they are for a couple of months to see if they're the sort of mantis that can hatch all year round.

If they don't hatch, then keep them fairly cool until next spring, then put them in the fridge for a couple of weeks. Then put them in a semi-shady spot with plenty of ventilation - if you want to keep them where you can actually FIND them, put them in a fine-mesh netting washing bag and hang it up - but check it each and EVERY morning! They hatch early in the morning and by the time you notice them they're like hundreds of mosquito-looking mini-mantids! Cute little fellas!!

Don't get too excited though - just in case your mantis didn't find a mate. If she didn't, it's unlikely that you'll have any mantis nymphs from her oothecas (egg sacks), but it IS possible that she mated before you found her - in which case, watch out! You can get dozens of them from one ootheca!!

I had not in any respect concept about it besides the undeniable fact that it is spelled praying mantis in reference resources as hostile to preying mantis. In each and each and every of the explainations i found, it grow to be suggested as this using prayer like stance the insect has, looks to have that is legs mutually as if in prayer.

Because of the description, the green with the bluish-black spots on the fore legs, it is most likely the European Mantis (Mantis religiosa). Typically this variety lays its eggs in late summer/autumn, and the eggs will over winter. They will then hatch the following year, in early summer (June-July).

Hope this helps!

Different species take different amounts of time. Some take 3 to 6 months. Do you know how long ago the egg case was made? Did you collect it outside or did you buy it from a science supply company or a gardening catalogue?

They lay in the fall and hatch the following spring or early summer.
