in such a way that a nonnegative number is obtained? What result is most likely and what is its probability?

I know you can only have numbers: 0,1,2,3,4,5
I know the answer to the probability question is that it is out of 36, but I cannot figure out how to get that 36.

Here is the probability distribution:
0: 6/36
1: 10/36
2: 8/36
3: 6/36
4: 4/36
5: 2/36

To see why, here is a table of all of the possibilities and of the resulting differences.

_|1 2 3 4 5 6
----------------
1| 0 1 2 3 4 5
2| 1 0 1 2 3 4
3| 2 1 0 1 2 3
4| 3 2 1 0 1 2
5| 4 3 2 1 0 1
6| 5 4 3 2 1 0
So a 1 is most likely and occurs 5/18 of the time.

it is out of 36 because there are 6 numbers on each dice (1 2 3 4 5 6) and if you have two dice that's 6x6, which is 36.

If you have Excel, you can simply create two columns with all the possible die combinations, which are 36. In the third column, you can use ABS(A1-B1) and copy it downward to get all the results.

The end result will be that 1 is the most common result, followed by 2

Dice don't have a 0 side. They are sided 1,2,3,4,5,6

The most likely result is 7. The probability is 1 in 6.

When all else fails, go to brute force. Fill out a 6 by 6 grid in Excel and calculate "abs($a2-b$1)" in the corner and drag it to fill the grid.
