Tylenol. Cheap, effective for mild pain, but it's relatively easy to overdose and it can end up destroying your liver and killing you deceptively easy.

Aspirin. Also cheap, effective for mild pain, but is acidic and can cause stomach problems.

Besides these, there are two major classes of drugs taking for pain: opiates and NSAIDs. NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen, piroxicam, oxaprozin, celecoxib, etc.) are mostly available by prescription only (ibuprofen and naproxen are exceptions). They are very good at treating mild to moderate pain, but over time, can cause heart disease or liver problems.

Opiates (hydrocodone, oxycodone, codeine, morphine, hydromorphone, fentanyl, etc.) are good at treating moderate to severe pain. They are controlled substances, available by prescription only, and each carry the risk of tolerance, dependence, and addiction. Overdose can cause death by respiratory failure. They tend to be very expensive and most doctors are somewhat hesitant to prescribe them since they don't want the DEA snooping around their practice.

Hope this answers your question.
