1995 Ford Escort Wagon. Automatic. Nearly 166,000 miles. Transmission has been bogging (refused to shift into higher gears despite high rpms) lately. I attributed this to the extreme cold this winter. The engine will turn over and idle. When I hit the gas, the car just sits there. not a twitch from the wheels. Have I blown the tranny? Is it worth spending the money to fix this?

response to some of your comments:

-The "bic lighter" was a gift. It has served me well for many years. I knew it was only a matter of time before the thing fell apart on me.
-I have tried to drive it in every gear. NOTHING.
-No leaks I can see.
-I have minimal auto repairs skills, I do have some tools
-Never changed tranny fluid in 4 years. Didnt even know there was a tranny filter.

Drove fine one minute, nothing the next. I over-revved the engine pulling out of snowbanks many times this week. Connection?

What is a clutch plate? What is the transaxle? Can I diagnose problems with those myself?

Peace, JB

No offense intended. The phrase was not coined by me. Catagory of veh whereas when repairs are warranted, they often exceed the vehicles value. Its just a matter of how many times you want to buy it all over again per se. Glad it has served you.My best response to the addendum is Scratch the clutch plate comment from that member. He or she speaks of a manual transaxle, not an automatic. with a hope and prayer, you may have a sticking valve body. this can happen in colder weather. Put a heating pad on full blast around the trans, or torch mildly to heat the valve body .is the fluid low? add trans-x and nothing else then sell it quick!

Well let me say I am a ford person, 166,miles is not a lot for a ford, although the weather on any vehicle is the issue. If it sits and spins, there are a few things.; damage to the main drive gear gearing, worn counter shaft bearings, in cold weather not properly lubricated, this is something every person should do, when it changes season change your oil and have a lube job. Oil needs to be approximately 10-40 or 10-50w thin so it may start in cold weather. Warmer months is about 10-30w, also the lube prepares the vehicle like chap-stick on your lips. Check with you mechanic I sure it is not expensive. Check you trans fluid when it is running, if you have fluid at a warm temp tell you mechanic. a bearing or u joint. not big deal.

A transmission on a front wheel drive car is called a transaxle . It doesnt sound good, check your tranny fluid theres a dipstick for it like for your oil.

Check your tyranny fluid as recommended (if automatic) in your first post. Rub some between your fingers and sniff and see if smells burnt or if it is dark brown.
If you have any fluid..........Fords have some problems with transmissions and slipping and sliding is hard on a tired tyranny....Hope it is just low on fluid....

You need to have it checked by a transmission specialist. It seems you were not doing regular maintenance on it , stick to regular maintenance after it is repaired specially oils and filters change on time.
