As a result of guilt: they have done or said something they know is wrong or of which they are ashamed.
For fear of punishment or reprisals.
To cover their tracks or protect themselves.
As a result of their own insecurity: to make themselves sound better or more knowledgeable than they really are.
Out of sheer mischief or dishonesty, to mislead other people or take advantage of them.
Because they are fantasists.
To be kind and spare other people's feelings.
To protect others whom they care for.
Because the truth is too unpalatable or unbearable to contemplate.

To avoid telling the truth. For whatever reason, that is why people lie.

Saves a lot of hassle. My wife used to say she hated lying and she never lied but I take great delight in drawing to her attention when she does and at least several times a month. and not just little white lies that she thinks don't count. There is female logic for you.
Keep your eyes and ears open and you will find EVERYONE does it.
