want to erase all my info on my computer as I am selling to a friends child. I do not wish that my bank details and other private info become available later. How do I erase all the info in the computer? Is there some software.

there's a program called ERASER available on magazine cover disks and possibly on line. It has the option to build a NUKE boot disk that completely shreds all data on the disc to US department of Defence standards or better. Then you can install a virgin copy of the operating system and software. OR if you are certain you know where all the sensitive data is you can selectively wipe files and leave the system intact. NOTE if any data is left it's not the computer user who may find it, but the hacker who gets in when the security isn't updated.

I would recommend reformatting your hard drive and reinstalling your operating system: it's the best way to be sure about your personal info being gone. The webcache of Internet Explorer can be cleared, as your user accounts, but there's places other than those two where your personal data would be stored. Be safe, and nuke them all.

BTW: Do the right thing-- if you're selling your PC, give the new owner all of your system disks and product keys/COA's to go with it. Nothing hurts more than needing to reinstall Windows, and being without an install disk or any other alternative.

The best thing to do is make a 98 boot disk then fdisk the drive and then format and reinstall the software, that is the only sure method. You can get software to remove it get Norton's wipe info and it will do a DOD erase with 0's and 1's three times. You could go on line at tucows and look up a free download but be careful go to www.norton.com and download the trial version for thirty days and that will set your mind at ease. Just remember there may be files you are unaware of that could get into the wrong hands so trust me fdisk and format. it's the only way.

it is impossible to remove information from a computer.
no matter how much you erase, delete, shred, wipe. it is still possible to recover any and all data from a computer. best possibility is to remove all memory hardware from inside the computer and then sell it but under no circumstances sell the memory hardware. memory can allways be recovered.

take the current hard drive out and put in a different one then disassemble yours then light it on fire with a butane torch $40.00 at the hardware store such as lowes or Home Depot personally I find that a campfire is a little more "fun" when putting a not disassembled hard drive into it.

Get a file shredder and a low level formatter. That should erase most things good enough to give it to a kid to use.

I'd strongly recommend you do as Mike Hunt suggests, and don't forget to pass on all your system disks, keywords etc.

Killdisk does an excellent job as far as your requirements go. And it's free!
