Here, in my state, a teacher can take courses to become an administrator. Our local Superintendent of Schools started out as a Speech Teacher.

In my country, teachers are trained for teaching, and they are usually teachers througout their career. They can change careers to be bankers or insurance salesmen or any other job in the private sector, at any time. They have to keep their teaching credentials up to date, and get additional training throughout their lives to remain teachers. If a teacher wants to be the principal of the school, or the superintendant of the school district - administrative positions -he or she has to get additional training like a Masters Degree or PhD. A teacher can't be promoted to a higher department, so to speak, without that additional training. I think that's fair.

There is no "promotion" for teachers here other than salary raises and seniority perks for the school they work for. A change in what they teach only comes from them earning additional degrees in teaching for those new areas.

I think this is pretty universal...
