I left my pc at work for about an hour while I went to lunch and when I came back I caught someone on my pc. They said they were only doing a maintenance upgrade but I've lost some programs on the pc that I need. I think they uninstalled it and looked around my files. Is there a way to see what they did and what folders they went to? Like a registry of events or anything?

Was this your personal PC ? If so ... what the heck was this person doing on it without your permission ?
I would go to HR or my boss or file a police report for vandalism of personal property....
Are you being honest with us ? Someone just goes to your PC & decides to to a maintenance upgrade ?
Are you sure this is not the company's computer ? That would explain him removing programs you may not be allowed to install on it .....
Anyways ... if you are telling the truth just grab this person by the collar & have him tell you what he did .... that's what I would do ... in a New York minute, pal !
regards,

It's your work pc-check to see if the guy is a tech there. Did anyone else get the same "upgrade"? I can't think of an "maintenance upgrade" that could be done without cracking the case unless it is a windows update. Sometimes an update can mess up some of your programs. Report this to technical support and have them fix it. If you did not have a program installed prior to this person getting on your computer you probably cannot find out what he did. You could use system restore if you are authorized to do so to return the computer to a state prior to the "maintenance upgrade".
In the future when you leave your computer log off if you have a password set for logging back on.

I think you can go into control panel and do a history of what programs and files have been viewed on you computer. Also with most files you can display them in a "detailed" format and see when they were last open. I am sorry my answer may not be too helpful but I am just trying very hard to help because I know I would be major bummed if someone messed with my comp. Good luck.

You can check any files that were used by going here (I only know of using windows XP for this, but it should be relatively the same for earlier editions):
Default:
C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Local Settings\History
From here you can select stuff the present day, the day before, a week before and so forth. If you can't find the folder, you might have to turn on the option to see hidden files and folders. You can do this by opening any folder window and selecting the following:
"Tools", "Folder Options", click on the "View" tab, scroll down to the "Hidden Files and Folders" section, check "Show hidden files and folders."
If you're worried about recent changes to your computer, you can try running a System Restore to a point before the incident.
Hope that helps!
And as a tip, password protect your computer. =)

no there isn't anyway but if you want to do that again lock it or something and put a program like PC black box on it while you are gone. The best way is to pass word and lock it you can do this in XP with the key combination windows+L but it will need to have a password on it first.
good luck

Look arround on your computer for a program called "System Restore". if you have it it will let you restore your computer to a privious day. this will not let you see what was messed with though.
