x = # employees in aerospace
y = # employees in agriculture
"3000 employees "
x + y = 3000
"If altogether 12% of the 3000 employees in these two divisions will be laid off, then how many employees are in each division"
12% of 3000 = 3000 * .12 = 360
360 employees are laid off
"American Products plans to lay off 10% of its employees in its aerospace division and 15% of its employees in its argricultural division."
.10x + .15y = 360
x + y = 3000

Lets solve by substitution
solve for y in the second equation
x + y = 3000
y = 3000 - x
now sub that into the first equation
.10x + .15y = 360
.10x + .15(3000-x) = 360
.1x + 450 - .15x = 360
-.05x = 360 - 450
-.05x = -90
x = 1800
x + y = 3000
1800 + y = 3000
y = 1200

1800 employees in aerospace and 1200 in agriculture

Let A be the number of employees in the Aerospace division,
and B be the number in Agricultural division.

First you form simultaneous equations:

A + B = 300 ---- (1)

A/10 + 15B/100 = 0.12*3000 = 360 ---- (2)

From (1), we rearrange to get,

A = 3000 - B ---- (3)

From (2), we multiply throughout by 100,

10A + 15B = 36,000 ---- (4)

Then substuituting (3) into (4), we get

10(3000 - B) +15B = 36,000

5B = 6,000

B = 1,200

Then put B= 1,200 into (3) and we get

A = 1,800

So American products have 1,800 employees in its Aerospace division, and 1,200 in its agricultural division.

Just set up a system of equations:
Let x = # of employees in aerospace
y = # of employees in agricultural

Since 12% of all employees are fired then that's
.12(3000) = 360 employees fired in total

so

.10x + .15y = 360 and
x +y = 3000 (so x = 3000 - y)

replace 2nd equation into the first and solve:
.10(3000 - y) + .15y = 360
300 - .10y + .15y = 360
300 + .05y = 360
.05y = 60
y = 1200

Substitute y in x + y = 3000
x + 1200 = 3000
x = 1800

Thus, there are 1800 employees in aerospace and 1200 in agricultural.

Hope this helps =)

let x=# of employees in the Aerospace division. then 3000-x is the number in the ag dicision.

12% of 3000=0.12*3000=360 people laid off

0.10x+0.15(3000-x)=360
0.1x-0.15x+450=360 subtract 450 from each side
-0.05x=-90 divide both sides by -0.05
x=1800 employees in the aerospace division
3000-1800=1200 employees in the ag division.

Aerospace:1,800
Agricultural:1,200

solved using system of two equations:
.1(AS)+.15(AG)=360
AS+AG=3000
