well...just remeber that less is more=] There are so many girls out there that put on waaaaay to much make-up.
Try some eyeliner right on the edges of your eye,a then put on a bright color of eyeshadow matching your outfit, and a light coat of mascara on upper lashes only. Space about two fingers away from your nose, and gently apply blush on the hard bony part of your cheeks, and smooth down. Keep it light! Add a little lip gloss, and you're done!
I've never been taught either...you just kinda read some tips now and then, and experiment, cuz everybody's different=]

The best way to learn how to apply makeup, is to go an have a makeover.
If you go to a Mary Kay party, they do that. If you make an appointment at a Clinique counter anywhere in the US that sells it (Macy's , Dillards, etc) they will do it for free. If you pick a time that they are usually really not busy, they will talk products, and colors, and with Clinique, they tend to have a pretty light hand with the color, so you don't look like you belong in a redlight zone when you walk out the door. :)
For foundation, the biggest tips I can think of, are find one that matches your skin really well, and stays true to that color even after a few hours of wear. That is the hardest part for me. Then use those triangular shaped foam wedges to put your foundation on. Use a BIG brush for powder, and use a light hand with it, blend the powder well to set your foundation. Then use the same type of brush for blush. (I never use the brushes that come with my blushes, they are way too small.) Make a really big fake smile so the round part of your cheeks is easy to see. That's called the apple of your cheek. Put some blush there, and then take it up the cheekbone, do it lightly. You want to look like you're "sunkissed", not like someone punched you in the cheek. ;)
Mascara is the last thing you should put on. Not too heavy, or it looks bad. Make sure you replace it every 3-4 months. It gets gunky and doesn't apply well after that. Air gets in with each use. That causes it to oxidize and get thick. Plan on buying 3-4 tubes of it a year, even if you don't run out that often. That will keep things like eye infections down too. And on that note, DON"T SHARE IT or other eye makeup.

1. Make sure your face is clean.
2. Apply moisturizer.
3. Apply foundation using a sponge or foundation brush. Blend along the jawline.
4. Apply blush to the apples of your cheeks using an upward stroke.
5. Apply eyeliner starting from the outside and work about half way in. Smudge with a sponge applicator.
6. I don't wear a lot of eyeshadow, it's up to you if you want 1 - 4 colors.
7. Apply mascara and tops/bottom of upper lashes and along the bottom.
8. Line your lips.
9. Fill in with lipstick.
10. Blott excess lipstick.

Well, there are many ways to put on or apply makeup.. most of which will go with personal preferences; after doing it a few times, you will find out what works for you.
1. Foundation: Fingers or Foundation Brush. Foundation Brush (made with 100% synthetic materials which will not break off - Origins carries some very awesome brushes with a lifetime warranty) will blend the makeup very well, and you'll notice that you won't need to use nearly as much product as you were using. A Makeup sponge is a bad way to apply makeup because all it does is collect bacteria and soaks up the makeup, causing you to use TONS more.. The color should match your neck exactly. Your makeup should never have to go past your jaw bone, and if it doesn't match your neck, then you might need to get your skin tone matched again.
2. Powder: Do not get a "colored powder", if you are wearing a foundation. Get a transluecent powder to just finish the makeup giving it that "matte finish" and help it stay in tact all day.
3. Blush: You apply the color in the apples of your cheeks, get all of the color out of your brush and then blend diagnally up towards your hairline, blend it will just a little of your translucent powder to give it that natural look.
4. Eyeshadow: All on personal taste. The best way to apply eyeshadow is actually to use several different colors. In the color you are going with, go with a "base coat" ALL the way up to your brows; this color should be like a "cream" colored or something REALLY light and subtle. Whatever color you decide to go with that day, pick out a brighter/darker color and a lighter color to compliment that color. The lightest of the two goes up to your brow bone, and then the brightest/darkest color goes in and just to the crease of your eyes. Eyeliner should be drawn on where your eyelashes meet your eyelids, this will create a more natural look w/o that "pink" from your eyes popping through.
- If you need someone to actually SHOW you how to put on makeup, go to an Origins in your area, they will do a makeover on you for free; they will also give you tips and/or pointers on exactly how to put it on.
Another helpful hint is a Virtual Makeover. You can play with colors and find looks for you; Then it shows you how to apply your new look. Just click the link below.

(I found this from another user; it was pretty cool, and pretty accurate in the makeup indrustry).
G'luck!

As a guy, I can tell you what looks bad: if you wear makeup and your skin looks flakey and cakey, then you've put it on incorrectly.
