I have never been up that way and am wondering if there are some neat places to stop by and visit on the way...also where should I go in Maine?? I have visited much of the USA, but not this area...any suggestion would be wonderful!!

I plan to take the trip in the summer.
Thanks!

~~I was very pleased to read the last sentence.

~~ Maine is a very beautiful (and big) state and can be quite warm in Summer.
There is lots to see, many places of interest to visit.
Called the Pine Tree State because much of it is forested.

~~ I would start by recommending a drive down the coastline; the scenery is spectacular (lighthouses beautiful) and there are many quite/quaint fishing villages that are a delight to wander around.

~~ There are a number of lovely cities, Portland (do visit the old Port District and partake of Maine seafood!)) and Bangor are both worth visiting.
Augusta too if you like history (the State Capitol and the Botanical Gardens are a good way to spend a day).

~~ As an aside Portland has ranked #12 in the world by Frommer's in its list of Top Travel Destinations for 2007.
Not bad for a medium-sized city.

~~ I have found some links that may be useful to your searching and deciding just where to go and what to see:
http://www.visitmaine.com/
and
http://www.maine.gov/portal/visiting/
Both good sites with much information for the Maine visitor.

One thing I like to do....may sound cheesy...is to visit state capitals and take a picture standing on the capitol steps. Some capitals along your way include Trenton, Hartford, Providence, Boston, Concord and Augusta. You could swing over to Montpelier VT also...a small town with a capitol.

I would recommend spending time in Boston, Providence and Newport. They're all pretty historical and the restaurants are great, especially if you like Italian food.

Once you're in Maine, consider driving up to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. It's really pretty and classic Maine with the rocky coast, etc. If you like mountains, head inland to Rumford...the rivers and lakes are really pretty there.
