way back in the seventies, i hired a rent a banger car from manchester to go to my wedding in suffolk, for the full weekend it only cost me £10, if we could do stuff like that now i would not need a car for all time, i could rent one when i needed it, or just for work give it em back at weekends, wouldnt need to worry about tax ins and stuff, i wander how much a banger would be now. they gave me an old austin cambridge, well worth a tenner.

The problem with your idea is the litigatious society we are now. If the car broke down and you missed an essential meeting you would sue the company. Likewise if the car crashed due to a fault.

Car hire is pretty cheap now anyway. Shop around and you get it for about £15 a day. So a weekend rent at say £50 isn't bad in relation to £10 in the 70's.

You can still rent small vans cheaply. We aren't allowed bangers anymore though. Never will the wind whistle up through the floor as you drive down the M6 again.

There are still companies around the UK that offer a cheap car hire service offering less than modern cars.

Rent -A-Wreck here in the states. I think they are great especially if you want to do in someone elses car in a parking lot that desparately needs a panel adjustment
