In a sense, your vote doesn't matter due to the structure of the system. However, don't keep that mindset because if enough people all decide not to vote because they feel their opinion has no consequence it DOES affect the outcome of the election. Basically, as an individual it doesn't seem like you make a difference, but as part of a group of people with the same desired outcome you have influence. If you're not going to vote, you might as well have no opinion.
Think of it this way: if someone runs under the Apathy Party banner, they could hold a VAST majority but since all their followers are apathetic, they won't get elected. All those followers can think that due to the Electoral College their votes didn't matter so their lack of votes made no difference, but it isn't actually true because of their numbers.

When you vote you are basically voting for the president you want. Based on your state Whoever wins gets the points for your state. The points are based on how many seats your state has in the house. So the candidate with the most points wins. Its important to vote so the guy you want has a better chance of winning in your state and getting the points. It is a screwed up system that needs to disappear. It should be the popular vote not the electoral college. I did not vote for gore, but since he won the popular vote that says to me the american people wanted him as president(no I dont like him its just the facts), and thats the way it should be.

When you DON'T vote you are allowing someone to win who might not have otherwise. So in essence you DID vote! Not voting is not a valid choice just because things appeared not to come out the way they should have.
While electoral votes should be shot down the real issue with the Gore/Bush election had nothing to do with electoral votes but corruption.

I know EXACTLY how you feel...-because I voted for Gore too. But here's why it's important to vote: Bush REALLY made a mess of this Iraq thing- & the Republicans are really going to take a "bath" in next years election because of it. Meanwhile, Al Gore has been busy peddling his concerns about Global Warming across the land & around the world since 2000- & he's raised a LOT of important questions, & done a LOT of good as a result. Maybe, just MAYBE- what Gore's been doing is MORE IMPORTANT in the long run- than what Bush has done since he got in Office. So maybe our votes weren't "wasted" afterall; they proved that Gore (& us) was right- and Bush & his believers, were wrong. NOW that we have our point "proven" we can go to the ballot box next year- & vote for someone who'll win & listen!! PLEASE vote. Someone's life may depend on it.

Melani,
Remember your other question about providing support for the troops but sending toothpaste and whatever else. Do all the soilders a favor and vote for a canidate that has better ideas about how to get us out of or at least in a better position in the war.
And if you want to know more about how the votes are counted go here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electorial_college

I know exactly how you feel. The electoral college system of voting waters down democracy so much that I even wonder if we still live in one. For instance, I live in TX...so my vote does not matter at all, b/c our state is always Red no matter what. Only the "swing" states, like Florida, Ohio, etc get to decide who the president is...and the politicians spend all their time campaigning to them. It's not fair and it's not democracy, the electoral college system should be overturned...I've been saying that for years.
