Alibris is a very reputable site, one of the biggest in collectible/rare used books. I have used it often, both personally and professionally. My library system uses it to replace older books that are out of print that are damaged or stolen.
Giving your entire credit card number is the only way to charge the cost to your account. They can't do it without your entire number. If you are wary of that, check with your bank or card issuer. Most will issue you a one-time number, different from your own, you can use online. It will show up on your regular bill, and there is no extra fee (at my bank, anyway, BOA).
If you read the fine print on the web site, they may have a way to pay by check. I know amazon.com lets you order the books, print the order, and send it in by mail. Alibris may do that as well, or let you call in your number instead.

Personally, I trust computers with my cc number more than I trust people.

check out www.half.com
they're a subsidary of www.eBay.com, so you can trust the site

when buying online, you'll have to give your full credit card number at some point, just make sure that whichever website you pick has security features.

I don't know about that site in particular, but yes, it is normal that sites you have never bought anything from and are not registered at would want the entire number and usually they want the three digits number on the back where your signature goes.
