first of all you will need to buy or rent land for a house.
second you can either build one from scratch using prims(basic building blocks in SL ) or you can get a prefab which are cheap and come with many scripted features. even if you do buy prefab it is always a good Idea to play with the building functions in SL will help you learn many useful things ..... have fun...

it can be a pain in the *** actually. I tried out secondlife once because of the crafting system. Basically you just need to play with the create object buttons. Practice placing shapes and manipulating them. once you have lets just say 4 walls and a floor select them all and push ctrl+L this will link them into one object. Just practise in a sandbox and you will do ok.
