If you were to punish a child what are the benefits? drawbacks?

Assuming we are talking about appropriate punishment, some of the benefits are: the child learns at home (in a loving atmosphere) what NOT to do out the real world; the child becomes conditioned to 'negative feedback' (which is part of the real world); the child learns positive social interaction; the child learns (hopefully) self-discipline; and the child becomes a contributing member of the family and society.

Drawbacks include momentary resentments; in the case of certain children, they learn to repeat the negative behavior over and over; hurt feelings; anger; desire for revenge.

But it all comes down to one major fundamental: We have to love our children enough to let them hate us from time to time.

Benefits for punishing a child are conditioning to get them not to do what they are being punished for. Drawbacks depend on what type of punishment you are giving the child.
