They have proven that THomas Jefferson did have an affair with one of his slaves. They did genetic testing on those who claim that they were the outcome of that union. I don't know how many Slaveowners have had an affair, but its probably a minority. Its a bit of a taboo subject, but I believe the majority of African AMericans do contains a small percentage of "Caucasian blood". Its not based on fact, but rather skin color of African American compared to those recently immigrated from Africa. Eye color is also another indicator. I also believe a large number of African AMerican contain Native American blood. Not only are their Eye shape, but the make up of the Native American club in my old High school was purely African AMerican. As for why females are kept, I believe it is for breeding stock. At some point, it was illegal to import slaves, so they need to renew the numbers of slaves. THe females do work in the field, but they mostly do the cooking and support work. Latter, when England enslaved the "coolies" in the late 1800's they learn that it was better off not to have females. This is to prevent the slaves from overruning the English military if the Coolies rebel. Coolies are Indian, CHinese and Indonesian workers with varying degrees of enslavement.

The questions of percentages that you asked are really impossible to know. Some people will tell you really high and others really low and all in between.

An interesting side note is that in New Orleans in the mid 19th century prostitutes would commonly advertise themselves as "Octaroons" which means they were 1/8 black. Apparently this was really in fashion because nearly all women would claim to be Octaroons regardless of whether it was true or not. Many purely white women would claim this.

The Thomas Jefferson question is a common misconception. Some high profile magazine or newspaper came out with a story a few years ago that he had an affair with one of his slaves and that this was confirmed through DNA testing. However they later printed a retraction saying this was NOT true. The positive DNA match came from a brother of his. So a brother of Thomas Jefferson was the one that had the affair. This doesn't make nearly as good a story so the myth continues...you can look it up from reputable sources and they will confirm the DNA testing proved that Thomas Jefferson is not the likely source.

Sorry I didn't see your very first question. They were used for various tasks, everything from cooking to field work just like the men. None of them sat around with nothing to do.

The Roman Empire, which included slavery, was a very economically efficient, viable and successful Empire. It was cruel, colonialist and wrong, but they still glorify Julius Caesar. Don't ask me why.
