I saw this story on a current affairs show about how a group of people are trying to start a charity where you can donated old/faded/freyed flags for them to be remade into garments for those in the third world. Apparently the material they use for flags is some of the most durable, and hence this would be very practicle and cut down on waste.

Do you think this is a good idea?
Do you thinkg there are many ethical issues involved (i.e. degration of the flag)?
Would people want to where clothes made of flags from other countries, particularly the US? (im not talking about specific religous groups but people in povery in general)

after your opinions

I dont really care about all the ceremonial nonsense that surrounds the flag, so I think that if there is possibility of making the old flags into clothes, we should do it. Burning them doesnt do anyone any good.

Im not sure how many people would actually care about their clothes being made from old flags, as long as theyre good clothes...Maybe the cloth could be dyed so you couldnt tell it was an old flag, thereby entirely eliminating that aspect of controversy.
But still, I think poverty-stricken children in the sudan would be glad to have any clothes on their backs, regardless of what nations flag theyre made of.

It's sad that anyone should have to wear old frayed faded anything except if it's your choice.
I think that yes there would be issues on both sides.
The die hard narrow minded patriots who would rather see another human being freeze to death, rather than see their flag being wrapped around the body of a innocent new born from another country. And the other side are those similar to some countries, who in the past, would cut the arms off the children who were inoculated by the US.
