The USB cable that came with the iPod (video) will work with the iPod Nano. It's the same cable.

If the iPod (video) is not working with your computer, such as uploading your music onto it, try reformating it back to factory settings using iTunes. If this does not work, then there maybe something wrong with the hard drive inside the iPod. Also ask them if it still works with their computer.

But only reformat the iPod if they gave you the iPod to keep... You do not want to explain why you erased all their music.

All iPods that have dock ports (the wide slot at the bottom) work with the same set of cables. Only the early generations of regular iPods (1-3, I believe) don't have dock ports, the first Shuffle just has a USB jack, and the new Shuffle uses a heavily modified headphone jack (functions as the charging port, the sync port, and a regular headphone jack on top of all that). So, the only problem you should have between the two of them is if you're using a single iPod dock, as you'd constantly need to switch out the pocket adapters to match whichever model you were planning to plug into it.

If the iPod is still linked to your friend's computer, that copy of iTunes would currently be the only copy that can sync with your new iPod Video. To reset it to your computer, you'd need to reset it to original factory settings, which you should be able to do by plugging it in and hitting the correct button on the iPod screen when it mounts into iTunes. If it won't even show up in your iTunes program, that sounds like a problem that you'd need to call Apple tech support for.
