You can use an electric hot pad or purchase those stick on icey hot packs. But it sounds like you need to good gyn exam to rule out a medical problem such as endometreosis.

In the week before your period, cut way down on the salt. Surprisingly dark chocolate in moderation has been known to help. And exercise, particular walking, helps.

Even if the only solution is a prescrption medication or even a hormone supplement, your body is telling you something.

Do stomach crunch exercises to strengthen those muscles -- I used to start doing them a few weeks before my period was expected. My periods were very regular. I did notice that whenever I did the exercise in time, I was able to avoid menstrual pain.

If I forgot to do the exercises, then the menstrual pain was unbearable until I passed the tissue (at the time in my life I thought they were blood clots).

The painful cramps were much like that I experienced during labor (giving birth). What about lamaze type breathing and rubbing your tummy?

Good luck. I did use Midol from time to time but don't recall if it was very effective. That was so long ago.

If you don't want to use any drugs, then I don't know if anyone can help you. My daughter takes Aleve and it works very well for her. She only needs to take it once or twice and it really helps. I understand not wanting to take drugs all the time, but maybe taking it only on the days that you are having real problems would help.

I have also bought those stick on heat wraps that last 8 hours and they also help alleviate some of the aches.

Ironically, light exercise (a brisk walk) can help ease the cramping.

You may want to try Thermacare pads. They are disposable heating pads that fit inside your clothes. They get warm when exposed to air. They have either a velcro-like belt to wrap around your waist or adhesive to stick to the inside of your underwear. I am averse to taking medication unless I am really desperate and these work well for me.

Curl up on a tight ball and relax to your bed. Have someone rub your tummy. However, Anaprox work wonderful if you decide to take any kind of drug. You'll need a prescription.

Plain old tylenol will do it, I wouldn't consider aspirin or ibuprofen "drugs".
