with cingular they are the only ones with EDGE now they have umts or 3g tech too but they are also the only provider with GPRS
this is how it works all 3 are their data network the gprs is the slowest then edge which also has faster areas called good edge which is when it shows up in caps (EDGE) on ur phone and then the new phones have HSDPA/UMTS which is the broadband speed 700kps. hope that helps
it just means you are in a high speed data area
also gprs is almost non existant cause the rest of the network is so updated where you only get gprs in very rural areas

Both terms describe wireless data technologies for mobile phones. 3G and EDGE are generally either/or. That is, a phone will have either EDGE or 3G, but not both. Under most circumstances, 3G is the preferred technology as it offers the user greater bandwidth. This means that data transfers occur more quickly. On the other hand, on AT&T's North American network, EDGE is currently more prevalent. You have a slightly better chance of getting EDGE service in the US than 3G on AT&T. If you're in a reasonably metropolitan area, though, this probably won't make a difference. If data speed is important to you, I'd say go with the 850i and 3G.

Enhanced data for global evolution (EDGE) is a high-speed mobile data standard, intended to enable second-generation global system for mobile communication (GSM) and time division multiple access (TDMA) networks to transmit data at up to 384 kilobits per second (Kbps).

It is basically faster GPRS (but not as fast at 3G) sometimes called 2.75G (2.5G is GPRS)
To take advantage of EDGE, your network operator has to support it too
