I'm in kind of the same boat with my son. He's gaining weight, but not at the rate he should be, so he keeps dropping further and further down on the growth scale. At his last visit, he was in the 3rd percentile (down from the 15th the month before), and if he's down even further this time, his doctor wants to start checking to see if there's a reason, because he eats all the time.

How old is your son, and what does he eat? Without that information, we can't really give you any thoughts or suggestions. 32 ounces would be a lot for a newborn, but nothing for a 12 month old. You need to add some additional information, please!

start him on rice cereal (with your doctor's permission)

edit: I say this because: 1) rice cereal is often fortified nowdays, and 2) by the time you are getting 32 oz, you are usually old enough to be eating solids. Babies usually drink about double their weight. That sounds like a 15-16 pound baby, which usually falls into the age range that you can start solids. 3) my doctor told me all the milk babies need is 24-26 oz per day. You can start water, juice, or rice if they are old enough and drinking that much milk.

You are supposed to start with rice cereal as opposed to fruits and veggies for digestional reasons. It is also more calories and more filling. Once I found my daughter was doing fine on rice, I started her on fruits and veggies, but rice is the easiest on the stomach. You dont' want a lot of acid from fruits in their stomachs too young because that can cause problems. Like when you have a stomach virus and the first foods you start back on are bland.

Like the PP said - How old is the baby? What is he eating?

Do not start rice cereal. Rice cereal is empty of nutrition. If your baby is under 6 months, all he needs is formula or breastmilk. If your baby is over 6 months, start him with fruits and vegetables before cereal. Those foods are much better for him.

I'll try to check back and if you answer the age/food questions, I'll expand on my answer. :)

are you giving him the vitamins? He maybe eating but not getting the nutrient he needs so his body is telling him to eat. Also recheck the amount of water you are mixing with ...it may be too much.
