My girfriend and I are going in May. We're in our early 30s, looking for a cool area, good nightlife, atmosphere, not too expensive. Is this area the real deal?

I agree with Trek.
If you wanna have fun in Tokyo, I think you should move around every night you're there just to get the feel of Tokyo.
Tokyo, similar to New York, has many layers to it and just when you think you've figured the whole city out, BAM! something new pops in front of you. I guess that's why Tokyo life is addicting.

And in my opinion Michinoku's summary of Kabukicho is quite accurate from a Tokyoite's perspective. It maybe a bit more from tourist perspective though.
Shibuya also has a fun night life though it'll probably have a younger crowd.
Ebisu as Trek mentioned is probably right around your age range.
Also Yokohama area is fun, it's only 30 minutes from Shinagawa on the Tokaido line.
Azabu juban is fun on a friday night. Close by Tokyo Tower and Roppongi, which boasts a huge night life.

Also if you want the drinking holes for the older working class people, then Shinbashi or Yurakucho area is loads of fun.

Shinjuku is cool area, good nightlife, atmosphere, BUT expensive. Be especially aware that your final tab could be much more than you expected due to surcharges for just about everything (nuts on the table or bar, etc.). There are, of course, a range of clubs. Some only allow Japanese in (although these are rare in the touristy area of Shinjuku). Clubs not in the center, but a little farther away might be cheaper. In any case, it's a trip of a lifetime, so enjoy yourself and don't worry too much about the cost. It is very lively area. The last time I was there, I passed - on the street - a Japanese girl who had green hair, skin-tight dress, spike heels, and was probably 6 feet tall!

Shinjuku is fine, though a fairly obvious tourist choice.

However, you might want to consider checking out the cool shopping, bars and restaurants in areas such as Jingumae (between Harajuku and Omotesando stations) and Aoyama (around Omotesando Station).

Shibuya, Ebisu and Naka Meguro also have their share of cool places.

Check some guidebooks or Google the places I listed above. All are cool areas with good nightlife and atmosphere, filled with places that are both insanely expensive and entirely reasonable.

Like anywhere in Tokyo, it's a matter of knowing where to look.

Good luck, and enjoy your time here in Tokyo.

Shinjuku covers a lot of ground. The Golden-gae is where the bohemian types go to drink all night in dives. Kabukicho has no kabuki, but lots of skank. 2-chome is all gay, all the time. You can pretty much find whatever you like in Shinjuku, if you know where to look.

It's a nice place. Really expensive though. Nothing less than $5 a drink there at happy hour.
