Hwy 101 - California (Redwood Forest) all the way up to Washington State - Oregon: Yachats (small and friendly place along the coast), Florence is nice, There is a state park towards Salem -Seven Waterfalls?? don't miss it. . . .lots of wineries too. Mt. St. Helen in Washington. This part of the country is exceptional - great people, great countryside.
Head to Colorado. THere are some pretty old towns, get off the beaten path. Estes Park is great, Leadville, Pagosa, there is a lot of history here . . .go south to see the Pueblo Indian ruins and visit the Grand Canyon of course!
Midwest: Branson/Lake of the Ozarks is OK, St. Louis Arch for sure! Chicago - lots of museums there, must see. North East has a TON of history, and Niagra Falls. Do not miss the Falls. Take the boat under it. NYC down to Florida - Destin/Grayton beach are great. Nashville has the Smokey Mountains - Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge are touristy type towns that are pretty fun. Elvis lived in Memphis!
Have a blast!

You'll definitely have no problem meeting people. If you want work you should have no problem finding it, maybe get some bar experience before you come but if you don't you'll still find work. Going up the east coast is a good idea. Try to get to the Barrier Reef if you can. Perth probably is a big effort for not a lot of reward but if you are really keen then go via Kakadu then quickly down the west coast. There isn't a lot there but awesome beaches and great fishing and lots and lots of empty space. There are boat loads of backpackers here so I'm sure you'll hook up with people. Try to avoid hitch hiking (wish I didn't have to say that).

It all comes down to the types of places you want to see. I hit the road traveling the United States in 1979. In 1990 I became a paid tourist and now travel all over getting paid for it. I've been to several places and it's truly unbelievable how much beauty is in such a small country.
we're about the same age, different backgrounds but i'd be happy to tell you some of my experiences and would love to hear some of yours. I do most of my sight seeing on a limited budget and time. Several places are good to stay a couple days where others are half a day and keep going.
If you look at a map or a globe. Look for a small town outside philidelphia maybe south of wilmingtom delaware on the outer banks. Find a nice place to stay and plan a week. you'll be within 100 miles of our nations history. The liberty bell in philly, Gettysburg and several other civil war battlefields, new york city, i'd skip that but being you've never seen anything like it you'll want to at least drive through.
You'd have the nations capitol, Virginia Beach, the bay bridge itself is a marvel that everyone should cross once in their lives.
you could then travel south to Atlanta to follow the civil rights, through the swamps over to texas where a whole day of driving feels like you haven't gone anywhere.
The west coast for sure, you have to put that on your list. A person could see a lot in 3 months but a person could also spend 3 months just seeing the beauty of the 3 western states.
you're welcome to contact me at old_wizard_515@yahoo.com. I can't tell you what to do on your vacation but I can tell you about some of the places I've been to and which ones I'd go back to and which ones I wouldn't.

"Who Knew" has the right idea - except you need to start just North of San Diego, in La Jolla and take a Baloon Ride at Del Mar and visit the Wild Animal Park - the Best in the World. On the way Noth stop in Capistrano and Laguna Niguel.
Further North on the Coast Highway is Quail Lodge in Carmel Valley and the famous Pebble Beach Golf Course.
