I think some things about it may be "fixed." I mean, I'm sure there are plenty more people wanting to try out than actually get let in. I think they must let in the really good, and the really bad - the ones that can get a laugh. I must admit that I've laughed at some of the bad ones, but I feel guilty about it, and feel that they just are getting ratings at these peoples' expense, which is not right at all.
Once America starts voting, I don't see how it can be fixed anymore. But up until we actually start voting, I'm sure a lot more goes into it than just who is the best.

I don't think it's fixed, but the judges sometimes have a way of making people question what they just heard and to vote a certain way. They should have performances on one night, have the voting take place, and then have judges' comments on the results show the next night so that the judges don't have so much of an influence on the voting.

I think its fixed in that they do whatever it takes to get ratings. If a bad singer is popular with the public then they keep him on as long as possible. They encourage people to act mad or cry just to get the ratings. It may be a singing competition, but it is first of all a TV program and if it does not get the ratings, it will not be around long. I think popularity keeps some contestants on longer than they should be, but in the end talent wins out.

No American Idol is not fixed.
People vote because of the judges opinions.
Simon seems to have a great influence on how people vote.

no they are not fixed. they have deals with phone compaines to make money from people like us.
these shows need to get off the air.. same goes for australian idol, big brother etc... and other stupid reality shows/ reality competitions. i am so fed up with them.. if i want to see scummy people make fools of themselves i can just to my local cafe and watch people complain about their food. that is how boring reality tv is.

I don't think it's fixed, but some of the best singers screw up sometimes and they get no second chance.
