in remeberance of the catholic st. valentinus, who was martyed and wrote a love letter to his significant other before execution. The catholic church proclaimed a feast for him on february 14th and it became a symbol of undying love. spread through europe and was imported to america where the greeting card association of america altered the tie to catholicism to a more protestant evagelical character, a cheraphim named cupid. today its is a multi billion dollar industry and there are more v-day cards sold than birthday and graduation put together, only second to christmas.

There are many opinons as to who was the original Valentine, with the most popular theory that it was a clergyman who was executed for secretly marrying couples in ancient Rome. In any event, in 496 A.D., Pope Gelasius set aside February 14 to honor St. Valentine. Through the centuries, the Christian holiday became a time to exchange love messages and St. Valentine became a patron saint of lovers. In the 1840s, Esther Howland, a native of Massachusetts, is given credit for sending the first Valentine cards. The spirit of love continues as valentines are sent with sentimental verses and children exchange valentine cards at school.

to sell cards

"Valentine's Day was probably imported into North America in the 19th century by British settlers. In the United States, the first mass-produced valentines of embossed paper lace were produced and sold shortly after 1847 by Esther Howland (1828-1904) of Worcester, Massachusetts. Her father operated a large book and stationery store, and she took her inspiration from an English valentine she had received. Since 2001, the Greeting Card Association has been giving an annual "Esther Howland Award for a Greeting Card Visionary."
