if someone at work makes falsa statement about me what can I do?

if someone that i use to work with are now making falsa statement about me what can you do? I already lost my job over this.What can i do so this does not affact me at the time of appling for a new job?

I would be seeing a lawyer to deal with those false statements and the possibility of suing the employee for slander.
