My partner & I are going to San Diego (ages 27 & 34). We aren't really interested in the big "touristy" things, though we have decided to spend one day at SeaWorld. We're staying right downtown for a weekend and then in La Jolla... any cool things to do that wouldn't necessarily be in a tourist brochure? Anything romantic? Thanks so much.

From downtown SD you should take the ferry over to Coronado and ride bikes around the area. You'll get great views of the bay, ocean, and bridge and be sure to stop by the Hotel Del. You should also walk through Balboa Park while you're here. At night you'll probably want to check out the gaslamp district and if you want to see amazing views of the city and water, go for a drink at the top of the Hyatt. Show up early for sunset because the good tables go fast. Mission Trails Regional park has some good hiking and lots of people like to go up Cowles Mountain. You could also head out to Lake Murray, rent a canoe and have a picnic.

In La Jolla try having a picnic at the Torrey Pines Gliderport while you watch the fliers do their thing. The Torrey Pines trails are nice, and take a walk down to the cove and south to Children's Pool where the seals hang out. If you like the water try a kayak tour through the sea caves.

I have a ton of non-touristy dates around the San Diego area on my new site, take a look at www.nearhere.com.

There are a lot of good lookouts in San Diego with great views you can go to. Cabrillo National Monument at the end of Point Loma has great views of Downtown, Coronado, and down to Mexico. The top of Mount Soledad in La Jolla has great city and ocean views of all of San Diego. The Cliffs by UCSD on La Jolla Farms Road right of La Jolla Shores is also a great place to catch a view of La Jolla and huge mansions perched on cliffsides. I would also check out the UCSD Gliderport right up the road off Torrey Pines Road. Torrey Pines State Reserve is also a great place to go hiking around. Also you might want to try renting some beach cruisers and riding down the boardwalk from Mission Beach to Pacific Beach. Driving up the coast along Pacific Coast Highway 101 is a really scenic drive and you can check out all of the little beach towns like Del Mar,Solana Beach, and Encinitias.

Presidio Park is nice, or the La Jolla Coves. You could also do a little sightseeing around Seaport Village and check out the shops and have lunch or dinner. Go to the Whaley House (it's supposedly haunted, but I never saw a ghost). Hillcrest has a lot of nice antique shops and vintage clothing shops. The Harbor Excursion is also fun. Since you're staying downtown you could go shopping at Horton Plaza and party in the Gaslamp Quarter. You could ride the San Diego Trolley down to Tijuana, Mexico (but honestly, I don't know how safe Tijuana is lately).

I believe San Diego means a Whales Vagina....
Just drive around... and ask locals when you are out there, or the front desk at the hotel. Or check online sites and see what they got that would interest you.
