It is wrong to stigmatize someone because they are sick, I have problems and that makes it virtually impossible for me to get a job.

Absolutely not! It's not a choice to be depressed or to have anxiety issues or any other mental problem. No one would choose to live that way. It's a chemical imbalance in the brain that can be corrected with medication. I don't think all the prozac jokes are funny. I grew up with a bipolar Mom and Brother so I know first hand what these illnesses are all about. No one should be stigmatized for any illness of any kind!

What? That's horrible. My nephew was born retarded, he's a wonderful human being and an important member of my family. That's like saying people with a physical disability should be stigmatized, both are almost always due to an unpreventable accident of nature or circumstance. My dad has terrible PTSD but he spent two years in Vietnam because the government made him. He left normal, and came home bat shite crazy. That's not his fault.

Not at all. We are living in an age of enlightenment (supposedly) and society should begin to accept people with mental handicapps like they do with people who have physical handicapps. But you just say the words, "mentally ill" to many people and it conjures up images of some poor person running up and down the halls of a mental ward, half naked, arms flailing wildy as they scream, "The nazi's are coming!" Many people who have mental illness can and do function just fine in society if their symptoms are controlled effectively. There is nothing wrong with having a chemical inbalance in the brain and needing the right medication to balance it out. The more people can learn about mental illness, the better society can understand it and therefore not discriminate those who have these conditions.

Definitely Not!

we are a whole mind/body combined... just because the illness isn't visual doesn't make it any less painful or have any less effect on the person.

it is a sad fact of life that anyone who has a problem that the doctors cannot diagnose then it must be mental just because they are not capable of finding the cause. western medicine only addresses the symptoms which have no impact on the cause and thus the patient is never cured! and therefore lives a life of stigma

because of the lack of compassion of our wider community many people who require assistance go without because of fear of the stigma you refer to.

we are strange creatures ... can't see cancer but we are soooo sympathetic ... don't understand why humans have trouble being sympathetic to those with mental illness.

I absolutely hate it. Is it so wrong to take Prozac if your doctor thinks it is right for you ,and you think it right for you it is no one elses business. If someone trust someone enough to disclose this information I surely hope they deserve the trust enough not to judge the person because of it. It is just medication to make someone function better. Should a heart patient be stigmatized because they take medication to feel better, what about epileptics should people make them feel ashamed because they have a seizure disorder. Some people have mental disorders and with treatment they are not dangerous or any different from anyone else.

No. Are You suggesting that They should be punished for being afflicted, and for seeking to alleviate the condition, and ameliorate Their circumstances?
