(60/a)/40/16=1/2
Multiply both sides by 16
(60/a)/40 = (1/2)*16
(60/a)/40 = 8
Multiply both sides by 40
60/a = 8*40
60/a = 320
Multiply both sides by a
60 = 320a
Divide both sides by 320
60/320 = a
Simplify
3/16 = a

You need to take the a up. Then you'll see clearly what to do.
Say that your equation was (60/a)/(40/16)=1/2
Here it depends on where you place the parentheses, but for the sake of the process that you want illustrated, let's say it was like that.
Then you multiply (60*16)/(a*40)=1/2
Then you take the a to the other side, (60*16)*2=(a*40)*1
Then that would be 1920=40a
And then a= 1920/40, etc.
If it was ((60/a)/40)/16=1/2, the same thing goes
First resolve the parenth. (60/a)/(40/1), that is 60/40a -> 3/(2a)
Then (3/2a)/(16/1), that is 3/32a
3/32a=1/2
2*3=32a*1
6=32a
a=6/32
a=3/16
Remeber yourself some process like this, and later on the rules will become automatic for you.

Step 1: Multiply both sides by 16
(60/a)/40 = (1/2)x16 = 8
Step 2: Multiply both sides by 40
(60/a) = 8 x 40 = 320
Step 3: Multiply both sides by a
60 = 320a
Step 4: Divide both sides by 320
60/320 = a
Step 5: Cancel 60/320 = 30/160 = 3/16
a = 3/16

Multiply through by 16, to get (60/a)/40 = 8. Multiply through by 40 to get 60/a = 320. Multiply through by a to get 60 = 320 a. The last step is yours.

first multiply by 16 (to cancel the last division), getting
(60/a)/40 = 8
then multiply by 40, getting
60/a = 320
finally, multiply by a and divide by 320, getting
60/320 = a
3/16 = a

(60/a)/40/16=1/2
or, 60*(1/a)*(1/40)*(1/16)=1/2
or, 60*(1/a)=(1/2)*40*16
or, 60*(1/a)=320
or, a=60/320
or, a= 3/16
