A want does not affect whether you live or die. A need is something that you must have to prevent death--you need food, clothing, shelter. You want a Big Mac, a Gucci handbag, and a mansion.

Another names for want may include 'desire' or 'wish' etc. whereas need may also be denoted by words like 'necessity', 'requirement' etc. Whereas want is our desire to have something, for which we crave, the need is our necessity without which we cann't do.
A same thing may be our desire at one time whereas it may become our need at some other time. Like if you want to own a mobile just for the reason that your friends have a one or you just want to make an impression over your friends then it is your desire. But when the same thing i.e., mobile is required by you when you are doing a job or you have to go somewhere, where circumstances make it essential for you to carry a one because you will not be able to do anything without it then it becomes your need.

A need is a necessity, something you must have to live or survive. A want is just something you desire, you may or may not need the want. I hope that this is clear.

Context.
People will say you need to eat. But that isn't necessarily true. You need to eat only if you want to live.
