She can't afford a lawyer.

Without being a lawyer, I would say first off it depends on several things. One being the dollar amount worth of the property she stole. The other being previous convictions for similar crimes. If she has been arrested and convicted for shoplifting before then she may go to juvenile hall. I am sure there are several possibilities that are open to the judge and/or prosecuting attorney. I don't want to diminish what she did in anyway, but she could have done something a lot worse. There won't be much time spent on giving out punishments.

Either way, there are several factors that weigh in on what may happen to your friend.

It depends on her prior record and age and background. If she has a clean record and comes from a good family, and has a good lawyer, she may only get probabtion and restitution. If she has a troubled past, she will likely spend time in a detention center. It also depends on the judge. Some judges are very tough, even on first-time offenders. Regardless the situation, she needs a lawyer.

Depends on the state, value she stole, prior offenses and her lawyer.

if it is her first time...they will probably notify the parents...and give her a stern warning and probably a fine... but I doubt she will have to do any time... unless it is not her first time... then more than likely she will get at least a weekend in juvenile....
