The Undertaking, Life Lessons from the Dismal Trade, by Thomas Lynch. It's a beautifully written series of essays about his experiences as an undertaker. The book was runner-up for the National Book Award, and Lynch writes with such grace and style, it's hard not to get swept away. It's also a very touching book. He's got a real empathy that comes though the essays.

I'm reading "The Day War Ended", a paperback published by Phoenix (a division of Orionbooks, UK).It's an anthology of short and not too long stories as told by those experienced and affected in the Second World War.

Longitude or The Planets or Galileo's Daughter by Dava Sobel. She is a reputable, the books are well researched, and her writing style reads like a novel. Perfect for people who don't really like non-fiction. The books are also in a small format and not too long.
