If a virus or protein can be crystallized in a highly purified form, it's structure can be determined. It's an extremely useful and important step to developing a drug to combat it.

X ray crystallography is a technique that can allow the structure of proteins and viruses to be studied. It requires high quality pure crystals, which can often be very difficult for particular proteins of interest. Studying the structure may tell you how it functions, invades cells, modifies host systems etc.
