I shall presume you have the need to remove and replace an alternator. Since arms are not nearly as disposable as alternators are. Lets change out the alternator.

I will do it with you, virtually of course.

Please carry out the following steps.

1.) Disconnect the negative [Black ( - ) ] Battery cable from the battery.

2.) Loosen but do not remove the generator adjustment nut.

3.) Raise vehicle with front wheels turned fully to the right. Ah see now things are becoming clearer are they not?!

4.) Remove the plastic lower splash shield. There's that little trouble maker!

5.) Disconnect the generator field circuit wiring connector.
This is identified by the only rectangular shaped plug going into the rear of the alternator. Squeeze locking tab to release, while squeezing, gently wiggle a little while pulling to detach.

6.) Remove the B+ terminal nut and wire. This is clearly marked on the alternator (or at least it should be). Put the nut in your top pocket for now. do not attempt to thread it back on right now

7.) Loosen pivot bolt, but do not remove.

8.) Remove the generator drive belt. No need to remove the generator spill shield, leave it on please.

9.) Remove the three mounting pivot bracket bolts.

10.) Now is the time to remove pivot bolt and bracket.

11.) This part is a little tricky. If you can tap on your head and rub your belly at the same time, you can do this with ease. Holding the generator in one hand, remove adjustment nut and slide the generator off the T-bolt. The T-bolt does not need to be removed, just leave it attached please, thank you..

12.) Time for the heroic part. We all love this. Que the trumpets! Lower the generator and remove through the WHEEL WELL.

A dozen steps easier typed than done, especially the 11th one!

Now simply reverse the same process with the replacement unit.

It's not that bad after all huh!

By the way, if you intended on pulling the alternator out from the top of the engine compartment, You probably would have been better off sawing off your arm LOL!

I am perplexed. Everyone here missed a big point. If you saw your arm off then you can have dad or wife change the alternator. LOL I'm sorry I had to have a little fun with this since most everyone answered it well.

Enjoy and have a good one... B.BYE

They're about equally easy. If you want to saw off your arm, just stick it in a power saw. If you'd rather change the alternator, grab yourself a handful of wrenches and have at it!
