I like freedoms and not having to freeze to death while waiting in line for toilet paper.

...seems I answer this at least once a week...

And the first thing I always ask, is: what time-warp are you caught in? Communism is not a threat to anyone any longer! (Unless you consider Communist China--our "business partner"--a threat. But, then, they don't want to turn us on to Communism; they just want to take us over by impoverishing the country into bankruptcy!)

Communism was an economic concept that valued the work of ALL workers, (supposedly) equally. It didn't work. Either humanity isn't highly evolved enough and altruistic enough...or it's just impossible in a world filled with greed.

The purest forms of communal living occured in convents and monasteries where the religious residents did not "own" anything, and all material goods were shared. (Did you ever bring cookies to your favorite nun? You had to bring enough for the whole convent or she wasn't allowed to have them for herself.) All work, from teaching to floor scrubbing was rewarded in the same way--it was valued, and the workers all received the same in the way of garments, housing, food, "pay" etc.

Communism was a dream that turned into a nightmare. But, it's gone. And I wonder why people still ask about it.

Communism is my professed ideology, and I am therefore a little biased in this regard, but I will try to answer best I can.

Communism, specifically Marx's doctrine as is layed down in the Communist Manifesto, and later Das Kapital. States a couple of fundamental truths. The history of humanity, is the history of class conflict. Eliminate class conflict, and you have peace. how does one eliminate class conflict according to Marx? By eliminating classes. In other words, the poor and the rich cannot hate each other for what they are because they will be brothers. Neither one elevated above the other. Of course this is always practical, and whether or not it looks good on paper, or so the cliche goes, it is the goal of most forward thinking human beings. Equality and peace.

I do NOT believe that the USSR, Red China, Vietnam, N Korea, Laos, or Cuba ever achieved Communism. Why? Because simply put, class differences were not eliminated. The USSR still had their upper class and lower class, as did all the other "Communist" nations of the cold war, and of today. Conflict continues in these societies because the rich continue to oppress the poor. Long story short, the poor said "Screw this, we're not living under the same thing as before" and overthrew their so called "Communist" regimes. The reason these regimes collapsed was not because they were "Communist" but rather their lack of Communistic attitude (though the Russian Federation has not given them a Communistic regime, it sucks as much as the USSR did). In the words of Che Guevera "Socialism is the elimination of oppression of a man by another man".

Communism was born out of the Catholic church. Of course, most people don't know that. And, the Vatican hopes that most people never find out either. Communism, on the behalf "mama", was suppose to take everything that everyone owned, make everyone a slave and give everything to the Vatican, and force everyone to worship their false god. (When I say their false god, I'm not talking about Christ Jesus.) But the Communist had a falling out with the church. So the Vatican went out of its way to get even. That's why today you hear the Vatican speaking out against Communism.

It goes without saying, most people in the Communist countries have no idea of the Vatican's involement with them--or even most Catholic's for that matter.

To make a very LONG story short, either read a book titled "The Secret History of the Jesuits", by Edmond Paris (ISBN: 9780937958100) or one titled "The Godfathers", by Alberto Rivera (a former Catholic).

BTY: In spite of what you may believe, Communism is not dead--not by any means. It's just sleeping, for now.

You can read the Godfathers book online at the URL below at no charge.

Communism doesn't work because you can't force your will on a country's people. Planned economy, predetermined careers, no wages for working, no right to privacy, government censorship to the extreme, incarceration or execution of anyone who speaks out against the government, and no freedom of religion. I don't know about you fella, but that seems like a pretty miserable situation to me. That's why the communist bloc of Eastern Europe fell in the late 1980's, and why sooner or later, China, Cuba, Vietnam, and North Korea will all meet the same fate. It is only a matter of time before the people can't take having a boot on their throats anymore.

A major blunder. Marx did not realize that labor is not the only creator of value -- trade creates value also. If you buy a loaf of bread, you received value: you wanted the bread more than the money, so you are better off. The storekeeper wanted the money more than the bread, so he is better off: a win-win situation. And this principle applies to all trade relationships, including employment. So Marx's thesis that the employee does not receive full value for the worth of his labor is erroneous, and that kills the entire reason for his philosophy. This error of Marx's was by far the most expensive mistake that anyone has ever made in all human history: the cost has run to trillions of dollars, and tens of millions of lives, and is continuing to increase every day.

Marx seems to have been off on a number of grounds...

Ultimately communism is less efficient than a market economy at producing goods and services...

In general the proletariat in advanced industrial countries doesn't seem to be terribly interested in revolution...

The increasingly severe recessions that would lead to revolution haven't panned out either...

Also, communist states, for whatever reason, tend to be governed by really hideous leaders (Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, Kim Il Sung/Jong Il, etc). In short I'd go for a different form of government.

Communism is a good idea that won't work. Just look at China, when Mao was alive everyone is poor. But ones we change from planned economyto free market the nation develop quicker then before.

like the first answerer, its a wonderful idea, but its not practical. communism is inherently flawed because karl marx forgot to figure in human nature. communism does not cater to ambition. what is the sense in becomming a great doctor when you can have the same standard of living being a clerk? this is why i think nationalized healthcare is a bad idea. when you take away the profit making abilities of a workforce, you diminish the value of the service. you pay for what you get. communism would work, except our level of moral reasoning only regards that which affects ourselves. we lack the ability to sustain a cosmological point of view to maintain communisms true virtues. communism does not serve the individual as in capitalism. capitalism works because it serves self interest.

I think forms of government evolve, and I think we live in a period of time where Communism would actually work. I mean, just look at these independent movements online that are using communism to its advantage (wikipedia, yahoo answers, etc).

Capitalism isn't a bad thing, it just takes advantage of everybody's faults and makes it work for everybody. Communism takes advantage of the good side in people, and with more collaboration and accountability (ie Internet, loss of privacy?) then communism can actually work.

I like the for-people heath care system but we can do it better but I don`t want the government making my house or shoes. Communism takes a leader with absolute power to work.
