I'm currently a drama major and yes I have taken the play-writing class at my university. There are also masters programs if you would like to further your knowledge of play-writing to the next step. It was a great class to take. If you are interested in writing plays more power to you. All actors need a script to act and all designers need a script to design. I took play-writing my sophomore year but I know some who took it as freshmen. It just depends on the school. It was an upper level class but because our classes are offered every other year we can by-pass certain steps to be able to take the classes required in our major.

Most college theatre departments offer at least one course in playwriting. There's no rule of thumb on this; the only way to find out is to call the specific college you're interested in (or check their catalog online), and see what they've got.

Drama or Theater. Not only are there classes in the subject, but one can major in it as well. One could even get a masters or doctorate degree in Theater.
