I recently had sex and I'm worried I might be getting implantation pains. I have some light pains on the left side and occasionally my heart starts to beat rapidly out of nowhere. Occasionally the pains will go to the middle, but never to the right side. I have some light discharge. It's not too heavy, and it's clear with no odor. I can't use a test yet because my period isn't due for another 2 weeks.

Are these implantation pains? And do you usually get implantation pains first or other symptoms...such as swollen brests, etc, because I don't have any of the other early pregancy symptoms people usually experience.

"Implantation pains" are actually medically unproven. Occasionally some women experience very mild cramping sensations at about the time a fertilized egg would be implanting itself, but this has nothing to do with the actual implantation, it is more likely a hormonal reaction to the timing of their menstrual cycle, since it is reported by in women who are both pregnant and not pregnant. A woman might feel a pain and turns out to be pregnant so she assumes that the pain was implantation - but just as often women who report the same sensation get their period within the week. So who knows really. And plenty of women who get pregnant feel nothing at all.

I work in an IVF clinic and it is staggering the number of women who swear blind they are exhibiting symptoms of pregnancy just a couple of days after embryo transfer, when in reality only a small number of them are actually pregnant. Those who are will say "I told you so!!". But it is unlikley what they were experiencing were true symptoms of a pregnancy - rather just general hormonal responses and wishful thinking, more like.

What you are describing, as far as the pain goes, could *possibly* be ovulation (since you said you still have another 2 weeks to go until your period, it is unlikley you conceived a week ago and you would be ovulating about now) as some women do experience a sharp pain in the region of their ovaries when the ovulate. But it only last a short time and is rare. As far as the rapid heartbeat goes, this again could be down to any number of things - stress even. Your symptoms are pretty vague, and highly unlikley to have anything to do with pregnancy at this point in time.

But, just supposing there was such a thing as implantation pains, then naturally the implantation pain would have to come before the other secondary symptoms of pregnancy, because until the embryo has implanted, you are not officially pregnant, and your body would not be exhibiting any symptoms of pregnancy.

In reality, the secondary symptoms of pregnancy, such as nausea, tender breasts etc, do not firmly establish themselves until you are about 6 weeks pregnant - about 4 weeks after conception. It is amazing the way women can suddenly exhibit symptoms of pregnancy if they think they are pregnant - however please note that PMS can mimic early pregnancy - tiredness, mood swings, ternder breasts, bloating and weight gain etc.

Next time, use contraceptives and you won't need to worry so much. You also won't need to worry about the possibility of STD's and HIV.

Implantation pains don't occur until the week before your period, often later. With your period still 2 weeks away it would be way too soon. It is much more likely that what you are experiencing is related to ovulation. So is the discharge you are describing as implantation spotting is generally pink or brown. You heart racing is probably just your anxiety, as it sounds that you are worried you might be pregnant. If I were you I would relax as implantation would not take place at this point in your cycle.

Usually you won't have pains w/ implantation; you wouldn't feel any different this early.
