Assuming you are only concerned with the cost of gas and not food, hotels, and other incidental expenses:

First, lets figure out how many gallons of gas you will need.

# gals = 5000 / 35 = 142.9 gallons

Then, figure out how much the gas will cost.

Cost = $2.85 * 142.9

Cost = $407.27

Hope this helps..I apologize for leaving the units off my numbers. They are hard to make look nice on a forum like this.

Divide the total number of miles by the miles per gallon to find the number of gallons to make the trip. Then, multiply that result times the price of gas per gallon to find the total fuel cost for the trip.
